Turkey

Turkey

Turkey is situated at the southeastern corner of Europe with the Black Sea to the north, Greece to the west and the Middle East to the southeast.  It had a population of 67.8 in 1999 and the languages spoken are Turkish and Kurdish.  It experiences hot, dry summers with mild, wet winters.

Its terrain is mainly mountainous with a high central plateau.  The capital city is Ankara.  The major Turkish industries are textiles, iron & steel and electrical machinery.

Turkey is currently in negotiations concerning its EU accession but EU membership is thought to still be a few years off.
